Renee Smusz, LCSW
                Child & Adolescent Therapist

As a therapist I strive to provide a secure and nonjudgmental space that invites others to share in the voyage of self-discovery. I believe a holistic approach to mental and emotional wellness can empower people to change behavioral patterns, strengthen social connections, and address the concerns of the present moment. I view this as a collaborative process in which the individual is the expert on his or her own mind, body, and spirit. I am honored to partner with individuals and offer tools, insight and encouragement so that they may feel better equipped to meet life’s challenges with hope and confidence.

Services Provided

Counseling and psychotherapy for children (5-12 years old)
Counseling and psychotherapy for adolescents
Family Therapy

Master of Social Work, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

BA in Psychology/Minor in Women’s Studies, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

I strive to tailor my treatment methods based on an individual or family’s presenting needs, assessment data, and evidence based practices. My areas of expertise include emotion regulation, life transitions, coping skills, anxiety and ADHD. Commonly incorporated modalities include Cognitive and Behavioral therapies, Mindfulness Based-Stress Reduction, Dialectical Behavior therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Psychodynamic therapy, Art therapy, and Family Systems model.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 8 years of experience in the Mental Health field. Prior to joining the Mindly Group, I provided therapeutic support to families of students attending the Wright School, a residential treatment center for children with behavioral and emotional challenges. Before that I worked with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools as a mental health specialist providing individual therapy to elementary aged children. In my work with children I utilized dynamic brain-based learning principles and play to teach emotion regulation and adaptive coping skills. I also focused on incorporating families in treatment to enhance the child’s social, emotional, and academic functioning while building on the family’s strengths as a unit. I have provided individual therapy in an outpatient setting working with adolescents and adults. In that role I utilized an integrative model, based in science-based practices to help individuals cultivate a more meaningful life. My education, training and experience have made me especially attuned to the complex challenges faced by adults, youth and families. I offer therapeutic services to individuals, aged 10 and above. I appreciate working with all individuals and their unique concerns.
